PLAYA VISTA (CBSLA.com) It takes about six hours to drive from Los Angeles to San Francisco depending on your speed and more than an hour to fly.
But in the future, the trip may take a matter of minutes.
Designers of the speed tube called Hyperloop say they are one step closer to making that happen.
Tesla founder Elon Musk says the technology is being developed with the help of about 25 UCLA graduate architecture students at a facility in Playa Vista.
Hyperloop has teamed up with the students to create the tube technology, designed to connect cities less than 300 miles apart.

How long will this thing take to build?
I also saw “The Running Man.”
We ride BART under the Bay with no problem.
They’ll be spandex jackets one for everyone.

150 Years. Whose going to give up the land for it? Whose going to get by the environmentalists to get permits for it? 16 Billion? Yeah, x10.
“They could build one up to the lake in Ohio, cause Cleveland sucks!”
Ding, Ding, Ding Ding.
We have a winner! Post of the Day.
California could build five or six new regional airports at either end of the SF-LA corridor for far less money than all of these hare-brained rail schemes. Union contractors would still get their cut. Democrat politicians would still get their campaign contributions. California taxpayers would save millions.
The only losers would be the rail idealists.
it will be too easy to sabotage. or even if stuff accidentally happens. at that speed it’s an easy disaster.
There’s a counter technology that can be used in cities such as Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, Houston, Jacksonville, Atlanta, etc. because they blow.
It is not the speed that kills you it is the sudden stop at 200mph that might hurt.
Better 30 min underground than six hours on CA freeways... even DURING an earthquake, it’d probably be safer!
The Bart tunnel has run under the SFO bay for about 40 years now without a hitch proving tunnels can be constructed safely in California.
Interesting point, but has that skill and knowledge been lost since then?
WHERE WILL THEY EVER FIND THE PEOPLE TO RIDE THE THING?
I don’t think it would be that much different for the occupants than those riding in a conventional train going 70 mph when the big one hits. As another poster already wrote, they are planning to mitigate the hazards with earthquake resistant pylons supporting the tube.
Let’s do the math....LA to SF is roughly 380 miles.
If you go 380 mph it will take one hour.
To make the trip in 30 minutes you must double the speed. Time to accelerate and decelerate would be included so the trip would hit speeds of 900 mph. Do ya think?
Has anyone considered moving at supersonic speed in a tunnel??
Also, let’s talk about the San Andreas fault. NAH!
Maybe we shouldn’t talk about this foolish idea and talk about getting water to the valley.
CA is a disaster, why double down with crap like this?
See my post below. 200 mph would hurt but this idea requires a higher speed by 4 X!
I was sitting in the cockpit of a B727, (co-pilot) at LAX when a boarding passenger asked the Captain, “How come it takes an hour and 20 minutes to fly to SFO and it only takes an hour and 5 minutes to fly from SFO to LAX?” Without batting an eye the Captain replied, “that is one of the mysteries of aviation!”
The guy went to his seat without a word.
Ahh, the memories.
