Mrs Albright’s brief taste of how if feels to be treated as a lowly cleaner came when she made the mistake of interrupting the Albanian delegation in the deeper recesses of the Rambouillet chateau, outside Paris.
Dugagjin Gorani, a member of the Albanian delegation, recalls his colleagues’ astonishment when the formidable Mrs Albright stormed into their room as they sweated over the Rambouillet peace deal into the early hours of February 23 last year.
“She just showed herself [at] the door,” Mr Gorani says. “One member of the delegation, who didn’t realise who she was, and probably thinking she was some cleaning lady because it was after midnight, simply said to her, ‘Give us five minutes and please go away’.”
Mrs Albright, a fearsome operator even by Washington standards, erupted at the Albanian’s impertinence. “Mrs Albright started using explicit language which the translators never could translate into Albanian,” Veton Surroi, another member of the Albanian delegation, told a Channel 4 programme on the Kosovo conflict to be screened on Sunday night
Well to be fair, Albright looks like a hotel maid. ;)
