VANSANT, Va. -- Some 175 miners at three SunCoke Energy facilities were laid off today after their mines were idled, company officials announced this afternoon.
The Dominion No. 36 mine and parts of the Dominion No. 7 and Dominion No. 30 mines have been idled, said Steve Carlson, spokesman for SunCoke. He said those mines are all in far Southwest Virginia.
The move is a step in SunCoke's ultimate plan to exit the coal-production business, Carlson said.
The announcement also included plans to reduce production at the Jewell Coke plant in Vansant.
"At this point, the plan is to look at outsourcing coal," Carlson said, adding that the company plans to reduce its coal production by 50 percent.

Another Christmas present to the American people from the Grinches down at the communist DemocRAT Party. Just in time for Christmas. Great timing ‘RATS!!!
How many coal miners voted Dem this year?
Obama should be forced to retire to Chicago in a home without power.
(no....I mean electricity or heat)
yes and global warming is a hoax
That’s kinda my point.
If BO wants us to believe in AGW, then he shouldn’t mind Wintering in Chi -town without man-made heat.
Wait till the oil industry starts laying off personnel as a result of the low oil prices.
We Work The Black Seam
This place has changed for good
Your economic theory said it would
It’s hard for us to understand
We can’t give up our jobs the way we should
Our blood has stained the coal
We tunneled deep inside the nation’s soul
We matter more than pounds and pence
Your economic theory makes no sense
One day in a nuclear age
They may understand our rage
They build machines that they can’t control
And bury the waste in a great big hole
Power was to become cheap and clean
Grimy faces were never seen
Deadly for twelve thousand years is carbon fourteen
We work the black seam together
We work the black seam together
The seam lies underground
Three million years of pressure packed it down
We walk through ancient forest lands
And light a thousand cities with our hands
Your dark satanic mills
Have made redundant all our mining skills
You can’t exchange a six inch band
For all the poisoned streams in Cumberland
Your economic theory makes no sense
One day in a nuclear age
They may understand our rage
They build machines that they can’t control
And bury the waste in a great big hole
Power was to become cheap and clean
Grimy faces were never seen
Deadly for twelve thousand years is carbon fourteen
We work the black seam together
We work the black seam together
Should the children weep
The turning world will sing their souls to sleep
When you have sunk without a trace
The universe will suck me into place
One day in a nuclear age
They may understand our rage
They build machines that they can’t control
And bury the waste in a great big hole
Power was to become cheap and clean
Grimy faces were never seen
But deadly for twelve thousand years is carbon fourteen
We work the black seam together
We work the black seam together
