A hostage has been forced to hold up an Islamic State flag in the window of a shop in Martin Place that is currently under siege.
It is believed there are 12 hostages in the store and an ISIS flag has been placed in the window.
Martin Place is the main financial area of the Sydney CBD.

CNN is using a Secular Muslim Leader in Sidney as reporter, named Jamal ?. Interesting. He was saying yesterday Australia government cancelled some passports of people planning to go to Syria, which could have caused this.
And the CNN USA host stopped him and said not to speculate...again, odd.
Is there any clarity as to whether the 5 hostages escaped or were let go by hostage taker?
Sleep well, JJ.
One last update per CNN . . . the gunman was apparently someone who was prevented from going to Syria to join ISIS.
Talking head on CNN cut him off, said they don’t know that, for sure.
Imama is in Australia and associated with the situation, talking head is in Atlanta, thousands of miles away, so OBVIOUSLY the talking head knows better.
It doesn’t fit the pre-approved U.S. Media narrative.
Thoughts are now turning as to how to move more than a million people out of the Sydney CBD as the work day ends, and the transport system is in chaos.
Like most Australian cities, not many people live in the central city - nearly everybody who works there commutes from the suburbs.
Gunman was one of the people prevented from going to Syria to join ISIS.
No - not clear if they escaped or were released.
Had to laugh about the CNN idiot saying not to speculate.
That’s all THEY do. HELLO!
If this gunman has no passport, is it likely he will end this peacefully?
I know your police and the news I did get from there was very calm and civilized, not emotional like USA.
With the way our court do things here - if he surrenders, he can expect less than 20 years. If he kills someone, he’ll never see freedom again.
He looks young enough that might matter.
Could a black hole somehow be involved?
UK Daily Mail reports they were believed to have escaped, not been released.
That’s a LOT of commuters! I feel for them and the mess that lies ahead as they try to get home.
Half the reason we've got this problem today is because of left wing bigots... These people may be murdered because of your left wing bigotry... It's finally happened! Cerminara shouted angrily before being taken away by police.
Cerminaras flare-up was an ominous reminder of the possible backlash the Muslim community could face when the hostage siege is finally resolved. And a terrorism expert agreed saying that racist attacks targeting Australia's Muslim community are quite likely.
Sunset is at 8:01 PM Sydney time, in about two and a half hours.
I’m sure they’ll figure out some way to involve one. LOL!
I had a workmate joke that he expected either Obama or Sarah Hanson-Young to demand, in the harshest possible language, the immediate release of all the chocolate.
Good I say, the Muzzies have brought it on themselves, I don’t give a s-— what happens to them.
Well less than 20 might look okay to someone who has not passport and no way out?? Not sure. There was one report of a vest, maybe bomb and other devices in other places in Sidney??? Have you heard that vest report there? CNN is just recapping what I already know.
The Grand Mufti of Australia, Professor Ibrahim Abu Mohamed, unequivocally condemned the hostage situation
[We] condemn this criminal act unequivocally and reiterate that such actions are denounced in part and in whole in Islam," he said in a statement.
We along the wide Australian society await the results of the investigation about the identity of the perpetrators and their underlying motivations behind this criminal act.
Yes - I’ve seen one dumb Greenie talking about how great Sydney is without all the traffic.
