Im standing at the intersection of Dwight and Shattuck in Berkeley with my hands in the air, shouting, Hands up! Dont shoot! It is the third night of protests over the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner and the grand juries decision against indicting the white policemen involved in each of these cases.
Surrounding me are students wearing Cal sweatshirts, young mothers with children, hippie types with gray ponytails, and a few middle-aged women like me. Although the crowd is sprinkled with brown and black faces, most of us are white.
The irony of being a white person mimicking a black person begging for mercy from a white police officer is not lost on me. But it doesnt feel absurd or self-righteous; it feels like a welcome outlet for my anger and frustration.

Any writer who can’t even distinguish between the probable circumstances of the Brown and Garner cases isn’t worth our time.
“I am convinced that living in an unjust, bigoted society takes a psychic toll on all of us.”
Perhaps she is actually describing where she lives - in leftist utopia. Surely can’t be the country as a whole is bigoted - the country that elected BO twice, made Oprah one of the richest entertainers in the world, etc? Recommend immediate professional counseling for her to deal with her psychic disorder - which includes the projection of her innermost prejudices onto others / groups whom she has never met.
NOT racial oppression. It's the lack of black people who can actually do jobs that are available.
In late '70s, companies had to hire black people. The huge company I worked for looked high and low for qualified black people. We even had training programs, including programs on how to dress at work, how to SET AND ALARM CLOCK, etc etc, and we had some success. Our HR officer was black, he did his best and so did everyone else. But it was really hard filling those quotas.
That’s right, you can’t have good race war if white people don’t start acting like black people. (/s kinda’)
Which race? Marathon or sprint?
Oh...sorry.
Showing my age. Havent checked into Oakland real estate in oh, the last century or so.
Just drove through there the other day....still just a bit, um...less then welcoming, shall we say.
When do the gentrification riots start?
She’s a vapid dilettante.
If she really were worried about bigotry and the status of Africans she could move to Liberia and spend her life trying to help.
But shes a self centered fraud looking for a little politically correct publicity, thats all.
Of course we should protest racial injustice against us.
