It is not a big if when people are jumping from the 40th floor to avoid burning to death. No if, no maybe. Certain death. And you would not dunk a known bad guy underwater to prevent a recurrence. You occupy no higher moral plane. St Thomas was pretty clear. Not defending innocent human life is a sin, not a virtue.
