The House narrowly approved a vital spending bill Thursday night despite deep misgivings among liberals and conservatives alike, sending the measure to the Senate as a funding deadline looms.
The bill passed on a 219-206 vote, following an intense lobbying effort by House Republican leaders and the White House.
Current government funding technically runs out at midnight Thursday, and lawmakers still are expected to move a stopgap measure to buy time as the Senate considers the main $1.1 trillion spending package. That debate could last through the weekend and potentially into Monday.
Passage in the House followed hours of urgent appeals from an unlikely alliance: President Obama and House GOP leadership.
Obama and Vice President Biden worked the phones to sway Democratic lawmakers. White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough also met on the Hill with the Democratic caucus. Despite sources inside the meeting initially saying he did little to persuade lawmakers, a rift emerged in the Democratic leadership late Thursday. As House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi continued to oppose the bill, her deputy, Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md., urged passage.
Meanwhile, House GOP leaders did what they could to sway conservative members who, for different reasons, were opposed to the package.
In the end, 67 Republicans defected, but 57 Democrats voted for it.

Nah. The vote for the lesser of two evils crowd will come out in 2016 and most of us will fall in line.
I still maintain that O’s arrogant enough to VETO it because it doesn’t have enough in it for his cronies.
I’m not ready to join you on that but I’m close.
“Im not ready to join you on that but Im close.”
You’ll get there as soon as your desperation to have your vote count outweighs your belief that there is still a chance the GOP will come around somehow.
“Nah. The vote for the lesser of two evils crowd will come out in 2016 and most of us will fall in line”
Not me. Not again. did it in 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013. Never again. This Charlie Brown is done trying to kick the football. Lucy can shove that football up her a**.
I’m just saying that there are good R’s here in Kansas that I’m happy to vote for. I didn’t vote for my US Rep or Pat Roberts. I have no hope for the national GOP and think every conservative in DC is wasting their time. It’s vain supplication at the feet of a tyrant.
I left the party. I will never vote for a Rino again. I am legion. The country is totally finished. In the civil war that bound to be inevitable I wish you safety and Gods blessings.
I didn’t in 2012, and I took a beating for it. Well, those of us who stood for principle are having to make room on the bandwagon for those who didn’t.
Conservatives, regardless of stripe, need our support now more than ever. If we threw the baby out with the bathwater, Ted Cruz would never have been elected. Yes, in today’s Congress he is the exception that proves the rule.
I can't tell you how disgusted I am by this sellout by the likes of Benedict Boehner and the Washington GOP establishment. They are worse than the Democrats.
Benedict Arnold was worse than General Cornwallis and went down in infamy in American history. He was our sworn friend and ally but he turned out to be in league with our enemy. That is worse than being just our acknowledged enemy.
The parallels are striking with Boehner and the Vichy Republicans. They have betrayed their own people. They do their evil deeds in the dark and not in the open.
The vote to bring it up for a vote was nearly unanimous
Don’t be glum, chum. After all, we held their feet to the fire. Besides, the Dems are worse. This is just a lesser evil. JonBon just kept his powder dry because he didn’t want to blow his political capital.
I think, that we have to unite behind the GOP for 16 and not waste our votes. Because Hillary or Fauxcohontas could get and continue Obamacare or back Amnesty and that would be a disaster. It’s the most important election ever! It’s the patriotic thing to do.
Jeff Sessions could use a bodyguard.
We passed it in 12. No one wanted, and many still don’t want, to face reality. They were and are too busy convincing themselves that running out and voting for Romney would show the GOP how serious we were about electing a conservative.
Oh wait. It did. Thus they totally ignored us on Amnesty/Obamacare because we collectively proved we don’t believe the things we claim to. If we did, we would not have voted 2 elections running to elect the very people refusing to stop them.
Preaching. Choir.
2014 was the worst thing that could have happened. The enemy that wears an “r” on their sleeve knows that they can run against conservatives, and win, handily. The country is theirs, now.
I’ve said for years that I don’t understand why liberals hated Bush so much. He gave them just about everything they wanted.
Now I don’t understand why they republicans at all. They now have a congress that will vote whatever way the democrats tell them to vote. The liberal voters should be ecstatic.
Just to reinforce the point, earlier today there was a thread about Rick Perry. On that thread, people were STILL making excuses for him and his Hillary love, among other things. A couple days ago likewise. People STILL try to paint RandPaul as a conservative hope for the future. I have even seen a couple posters admit they’d vote for Jeb or Mitt in 16.
Complete denial of reality. Whether that’s from fear, stupidity or paid work from the GOP I dunno for sure but I have my suspicions. It is, however, the exact reason we are in this mess.
Sermon still needs to be made. Not to you, no, but there are still plenty that doggedly refuse to accept the reality and it only hinders us going ahead.
I agree with you. If a party is corrupt and you’re a member in good standing, you’re at the very least support corruption. I won’t vote for someone who does that.
