When the Reform Party popped up in Canada, it was an open door for a decade plus dominance of national politics by the Liberal Party.
Jean Chretien was very obnoxious but above all his administration was corrupt with tax money routed to Liberal Party supporters.
They tried a ‘gun registry’ but it fell apart with promises about its cost being low being constantly revised upwards until it became impractical for a country whose expenses are weighted down by government spending on health care....
But eventually the old “Progressive Conservative Party” that among other things imposed a national sales tax in the 1980’s to break the camels back with grassroots Canadians was finally replaced by a new “Conservative Party of Canada” and its leader, current PM Stephen Harper.
