May be the movie of the year.

We rarely get to see a story about an American hero.

Not for nothing is it called “The Greatest Generation.”

I know I couldn’t have... God certainly had a plan for him. Amazing story and I’m privileged to have seen him at my church 3 years ago. Incredible.

This is one movie I will go see. The book was awesome.

Louie was a true hero and one heck of a man. Thank God such men exist.

“Unbroken”...one of the best books that I have ever read...I didn’t put it down until I was done and then I started over!

Read the book when it first came out, and more than once I was brought to tears by the sufferings he and the rest of the POW’s went through. What an amazing man. Can’t wait to see the movie.

He was an Olympic champion athlete before the war - and he almost didn't make it through the ordeal.

A lot of Japanese war criminals got away with it.

What are the chances that it will be released in Japan?

I am guessing 0%

Last heard books recounting the Rape of Nanking were still banned in Japan.

After The Passion, I decided to avoid movies with torture in them.

It was explained to me that the Japanese are a vengeful people. After the war, the people who were guilty of torture were convinced their victims would come after them...if they escaped the war crimes tribunals.

I read the book. It's inspiring and in many places brutal. I've read WW2 history since I was twelve and I'm more than familiar with the unbelievable brutality and cruelty that was the hallmark of the Imperial Japanese Army. Often it was cruelty for it's own sake as the Japanese of that time were among the most racist people on Earth. Some 36% of Allied prisoners died in Japanese captivity, most of them through deliberate neglect, torture and starvation. And today Japan still refuses to accept it's guilt for these crimes and even for their part in starting the war. The world always gets weepy on the anniversary of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings. It never gets weepy on December 7th. though.

I know a man, many years my senior, who left school at 12 to work, because his family was too poor. He got a job shoveling coal and painting. He joined the Army in 1940 to get 3 meals a day.

He was wounded in the Japanese invasion of the Philippines, was on Corregidor when it surrendered, and was on the Bataan Death march, and the Hell Ships. He wound up in a Manchurian coal mine for the extent of WWII.

The guy had toughness and self-reliance built in from an early age. How many 19 year olds now could survive such a situation? I don’t know - people can rise to incredible challenges, but certainly, very few would make it.

Rumor has it that Louies conversion to Christianity is being left out of the movie.

It’s interesting, he was raised Catholic. He didn’t become a Christian until he came home.

The speaker is confused.
