All depends on where you establish your defensive perimeter. Plus think about a defense in depth, specifically different ranges of firearms.

Get your CCW. Practice defensive firing from your vehicle both moving & stopped.
Zombie Apocalypse is here.

All depends on your ability to control the weapon. At 50 feet I can put a whole mag from my MP5 in a 4 inch circle.

How many times have you sat in front of the tv and watched a crime being committed and said outloud if he or she had a gun this not only would have stopped the crime but sent a message, we need to send more messages! When you see a survielance camera of a convienience store clerk being robbed at gun point, a sawed off shot gun placed under the counter pointing at the perps balls will do the trick.

Plus figure on a $10,000+ price tag for a quality HK or similar. Bring your AMEX card.
Now a belt-fed, crew-served, and roof-mounted weapon attached to the top of my home might be a force with which to be reckoned. ;-)

Excellent point, Blueflag.
I have contemplated distances...rifle, shotgun, pistol, etc.
Another thing is simply having the information that mobs that don't mean well are potentially en route.
There are countless websites dedicated to the topic of reasonable preparedness and all. One would seemingly have to align himself/herself with likeminded people in the same neighborhood. After all, one cannot do it alone. A person eventually needs to drink, eat, and sleep. Your concept of thinking of defensive perimeter in depth is a good one.

Full auto is like having a very big mean brother. When you need it you appreciate it. Supressing fire and movement are key to success in urban combat.

Genuine machine guns are expensive - and then one has to pay an extra $200 and wait for The Blessing from the BATF to own one.
On the other hand, an entry semi-auto AR-15 can be had for just a bit over $450. For another $150 or so, we cash-strapped Bible thumpers and bitter clingers out here in Flyover Country can also lay in a few extra mags and a workable stash of good ammo for those "post-awkward" times.
That is probably cheaper than moving all the way across the country to get away from the rampaging mobs of fools and stupid Liberal tools (but, I repeat myself).

You are heavy. MP5’s can be had for around $6k. You want a real M4 now you are talking some change.

I read the article and liked it; the basic problem with “peace on earth” lies with the true quote. As opposed to the song lyrics and many peoples’ statements, it’s not “good will to men,” but rather “to men of good will.” That’s a fundamental difference, and really justifies our second amendment.

Meh.
I prefer to carefully aim each shot, and full auto costs too much money for the gun and the ammo.
I like a nice tight grouping.

I’d add
9mm
30.06 and
7.62X39
to your list. Have those in addition to your list and you can feed nearly every gun collection in the USA.

The ladies have their 9mm’s; the lads the 45s.
.308/ 7.62 NATO Is in our armory, not the 30-06. Tempting though.

Por que no dos? I've got both. A 220gr 30.06 round will take down every large game animal in the 50 states. 9mm is the standard issue cartridge for all NATO countries. Think logistics, not tactics. LOL!

“Any type AR on semi auto is more than enough to get the job done.”
Just go to a range that allows it and fire off a full 30 round magazine as fast as you can pull the trigger, time it, and calculate how many rounds you could get off in a minute at that rate, absent the need to change magazines. In my experience, the number of rounds comes out to about 300 per minute, pretty much the machine gun effect without a machine gun.
