Much as I hate to quote a Times editorial, is there any truth to their statement that Garner couldn’t breathe because he was prone on the ground with cops pushing on his back to hold him down, forcing his overweight midsection into a distorted position that kept his diaphragm from moving? That sounds so much more likely to me. Not sure it matches the autopsy evidence.
That particular problem is why you don’t transport obese suspects who are in maximum restraints in the face-down position. It’s a known issue.
Nope. They got off of him when he said he couldn’t breathe. He continued to breathe and talk until taken away in the ambulance. Total time from take down to ambulance, less than 11 min.
