After about 30 years of using the Beretta as the primary sidearm pistol for the U.S. military, the Pentagon is seeking a new gun contract.

For gun manufacturers, this kind of a contract is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

While the Beretta lasted three decades, the U.S. military's first semiautomatic standard-issue sidearm, the M1911 from Colt, lasted nearly 90 years. It was issued during the U.S. war in the Philippines through the World Wars to Vietnam and beyond.

Two certainties of whatever is picked: itll be unfit for any mission and have a manual safety.

1. Wow what an incredibly informationless article.
2. I wonder if Sig bribed somebody. They came out with their Sig 250, with it’s crazy amount of modularity, a few years ago and everyone said, “really cool but I don’t know what the use case would be”. But now , it looks like the DoD is making noise about extreme modularity being one of their big criteria. (don’t bother looking in the article for this or any other fact see #1)

The 45ACP is a pussycat round to shoot, it is NOT a wrist breaker.

AGREED!

9mm is the favorite caliber of the Castro District and the Folsom Street Fair

But in that case, 9mm doesn't refer to a pistol cartridge.

As the 14 year old boy-twin asked me: "Did you really just tell that guy to get off your lawn?"

Yeah. I'm that old guy.

If a combatant can’t handle a 45, they can’t handle combat.
The 45ACP is a pussycat round to shoot, it is NOT a wrist breaker.

A .45 doesn’t so much kick as give your hand a shove. My LCP .380 has a far sharper kick.

You are right of course. I think an M1 Carbine is a far better offensive weapon for use by giraffes then any handgun. During the battle of the cities my father's squad had several giraffes equipped with them.

“But guns chosen by the military achieve cult status, used as iconic weapons in James Bond and other action movies, and become highly desirable among civilian gun owners too.”

I think your see M9’s in movies so much because they are popular prop guns. You can use them in Army movies and in normal movies where the script just calls for “a gun” and they have an external hammer that people love to cock for dramatic effect.

I’ll admit to having a Taurus knock off of an M9, even though I never had, or qualified with an M9 in the Army. Weighs a ton but it shoots and runs and didn’t cost much.

The FBI just issued the results of a major study regarding the effectiveness of handguns in the field and the (not so) surprising result was that caliber and ammo loads pale in significance to the ability to hit what you are aiming at with regard to stopping your opponent. Thus, whether its 9mm, 40 cal or .45 acp - use what you are comfortable with and practice, practice, practice.

Check out the Beretta PX4 in .45.Ten round mag, smooth shape(comes out of the holster easily),and it’s a natural pointer. My wife has used one for her carry gun for over 2 years now,no problems or complaints.

Interestingly, the only time it is too much to handle, is when you try to shoot it from too small a platform. A 1911, piece of cake to shoot. The new Springfield XD-S in .45? With my large hands, only my middle two fingers fit on the grip. I just don't consider it safe in my hand.

I would go with the FN Five Seven it is a lightweight polymer-based with a large magazine capacity, ambidextrous controls, low recoil, and the ability to penetrate body armor when using certain cartridge types.

Yep. If you are talking offensive combat: firepower rules. More lead downrange+little perceived recoil+hyper velocity = great for putting down Tangos, esp if they have a vest/on. (5.7mm will ding off of sapi plates though, even crappy ones).
