If I recall correctly, the State of the Union speech has not always been a prime time TV spectacle. If I recall correctly some presidents have delivered a hand written letter to Congress, but didn’t show up in person to deliver a speech.
This is something which has evolved into a prime time speech each year, but there’s no reason it has to be that way. Considering who the current president is, I won’t be watching anyway.
To: tellw
There doesn’t even have to be a speech. Jefferson just sent a letter.

C-Span would re-broadcast it and it would be online too for anyone who missed it.

The SOTU doesn’t even have to be an annual event. The Constitution states:
“He shall from time to time give to Congress information of the State of the Union and recommend to their Consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient.”
To: tellw
Never going to happen under this regime - their misbegotten agenda could not withstand the light of day.

O stranger, tell the Lacedaemonians that we lie here, obedient to their command.
Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name. (Isaiah 49:1 KJV)

Congress doesn’t have to invite President. Until FDR, President submitted a handwritten State of union. If Boehner had any balls, he would do the same.

Obama can give his SOTU anytime he wants; it won’t bother me. I never watch or listen anytime he’s on. If I wanted to listen to a series of lies, I could just watch CBS/CNN/NBC/ABC, but I always have better things to do.

Since we’ve been in biz for 230 years or so, you can bet it wasn’t always broadcast in prime time.
To: Perdogg
I don’t think getting rid of it is entirely necessary. I always liked seeing Reagan speaking before the Congress. Oh, the times. However, move it to daytime and it makes it less imperial.
