The coroner did conclude it was a homicide and the police officer who choked him should have had to face a jury.
Over untaxed loosies!
Agreed, if you want a case where the public should be outraged, this one is it.. All on tape and cops completely in the wrong.... Amazing the complete ignorance being espoused by some folks here.
Agreed. Strongly agree.
I watched the video....I don’t agree with your conclusion
“remember that this incident started because Garner was suspected of selling untaxed cigarettes.”
I don’t know much about this particular incident, so I am sure I will learn more from my fellow FReepers. That said, your comment above now reflects a death toll from the war on tobacco to be higher than the death toll resulting from “second hand smoke!”
I have to agree. Without a doubt excessive force was used. I am not sure how they did not get an indictment. The only ting I can think of is that the prosecutor went all in for murder one and did not attempt a lesser charge.
At any rate if you live in NYC ammo up and board the windows its going to be one hell of a week.
I agree. The officers definitely seemed to have used excessive force.
I was repulsed by the action of police shown in the video.
Question: If someone dies during the inevitable riots, will the government count the death as "smoking related?"
Selling untaxed cigarettes should not get you the death penalty.
Yeah, I have to say I agree with you. The guy posed no bodily threat....cops went overboard.
As a retired LEO I say the video is damning. You can hear Garner saying, “I can’t breathe”. At that point he was subdued and should have been cuffed and allowed to sit up. Not like he wasn’t surrounded by four officers. Unless there is something else I’m not sure about the Grand Jury’s decision.
A cop and military trainer was on the radio today. He never goes for the choke hold and if there is one, you are supposed to set the person up asap and slap on their back to restore their breathing or call 911. The choke hold was too long and when someone says they cannot breathe even if they are thugs, that’s a big red flag.
It's a partial video. No one knows what was going on before the recording, or after. The jurors who decided not to indict know a heck of a lot more than we do.
Remember, things are not always the way the media reports them. Things may not be at all what they seem.
Unless all the facts are released (which probably won't be because they don't fit De blasios narrative), I'm siding with the jury.
(Remember how the media replayed the 911 call during the martin thing? They deliberately left out the race question asked by the 911 operator, and made the recording sound like zimmerman didn't like martin simply because he was a black man.)
“Unlike Ferguson, this is a case where the officer(s) involved were clearly in the wrong. The video is pretty damning. And, remember that this incident started because Garner was suspected of selling untaxed cigarettes.
“
Yep. Mike Brown tried to kill Officer Wilson. This is different.
And if anyone takes to the comments section of articles with “Pants up, don’t loot” or “the guy deserved it” or snarky comments, they are falling into the trap and giving validation to the defenders of Mike Brown.
Which is a damn shame.
i may be in the minority here but i completely agree with you...
Clearly? Hardly.
What should officers have done with a vociferously resisting, non-compliant arrestee of Garner’s size? Just waved him goodbye? When officers make the decision to legally arrest, that decision must be followed through. This incident is fully on Garner’s head.
I agree. All conservatives should mistrust police as a natural knee jerk reaction. They are a essential evil we endure to a civilized nation, but we don’t want them using that sort of force against us.
