My ancestors were hired to do dangerous jobs so that slaves weren’t injured or killed.
My great-great-great-grandfather guarded a slave bureau in Louisiana after the Civil War.
Slaves were valuable! Indentured servants and hungry immigrants were more dispensable. Keep the stories going, and not just here. Every story worth telling is worth writing up for a journal. There are people hungry for these stories of real people and real struggles. Start with the county genealogical society where your ancestors lived. Submit a short piece, or at least provide them a narrative to put into their manuscript files. History is written by those who leave an historical record. This place is not enough. I challenge you all, tell your stories, document them, submit them, publish them. Or the prevailing narrative will drown them out, as it is intended to do, along with abysmal education of the young.
