Chris Rock explained in a lengthy interview Sunday that he believes part of healing racial relations in America is by white people “owning” the actions of their ancestors.
The black comedian told New York magazine’s Frank Rich that racial progress in America is “nonsense” and that the only thing that’s changed is white people aren’t as crazy as they used to be.

Most of my ancestors were dirt poor, until they came to this great nation. They worked hard, raised their kids with morals, and my generation owes THEM a debt.

No. It doesn't matter what my ancestors did, good or bad. I'm not responsible for it and should not have to either apologize or brag about it or, as Chris Rock wants me to do, "own" it.
Sharpton and Jackson with the rent a mob mentality are the problem. Because until they die off and stop this money grabbing and witnesess for the NAACP lawsuits, we will have chaos.
I say do NOT hire white police in black communities, just give them their own police who are black....and black on black crime is higher....so you can guess how that will work out, but it will show that police do need to kill the criminals who are trying to kill them.
While there are many excellent responses here they all fall short. Blacks will never give up their victim cards. That is what “white privilege” is all about. White privilege is something that can never ever be atoned for (according to blacks). Everything you have, everything you do was only possible because of what was stolen from black people by the white system. It is a perpetual ideology that ensures handouts and special treatment ad infinitum. Pointing out that your family fought in the civil war doesnt even address the 150 yrs since then that blacks believe you and your whole family received unearned privilege.

Chris Rock is full of himself and full of Chit. If your ancestors did not own any slaves as most people’s did not then what is there to own up to? Even most people in the South did not own slaves. They were too expensive. There would only be a small pool of of whites that had ancestors who owned slaves. And why should they feel guilty as they didn’t even know their ancestors.
Chris, own your ancestors selling your ancestors to slave traders to sell in the new world. Chris thank the slave owners your making millions instead of running from lions.
Mr. Rock, we don’t have to “own” what our ancestors did or didn’t do. That’s what America is all about. No guilt here.
Some community activists and a few ignorant black people are pushing the rest of us with their marching, looting, and burning and open expressions of racism while expecting a payback from guiltless people like me. Don’t blame me. Go find somebody else to blame.
Try to accept me and forgive and forget the past while we can still move forward. The old plantation days are gone forever. Pushing this black racist agenda thing will get you nothing but more of the same. The final push back may result in a civil war.
I used to care, but after 50 years, frankly I don’t give a damn any more. It’s your move.

In fact, a large percentage of black Americans of slave descent can claim slaveholder ancestry, so are closer in that way to “the institution” than are most white Americans.
