Agreed. It doesn't matter how smart you are, if you don't have the drive to succeed, and having drive and energy is a big factor. If only those kids who spent hours practicing sports (in vain hopes of getting a pro contract with NBA or NFL) spent that time studying instead.
But meanwhile, look at #60, and read up on the Minnesota Transracial Adoption Study (not just the wiki link)

I shall...
Most people have all the intelligence they need to be successful. Intelligence is not, IMO, a primary factor. It's about culture and, therefore, values...not raw intelligence, but how it's applied.
Our local supermarket employs some people with Downs Syndrome. They do the work they are capable of, bagging groceries, and seem happy doing it.
I doubt they would be successful aerospace engineers or neurosurgeons, though.
Yes, intelligence is only a factor in success, but there are jobs which require a certain minimum intelligence in order for the worker to be functional. Do you dispute that?
If those with Down's syndrome are employable, then who isn't?
Observe those around you, those with whom you deal. If you want to be a rocket scientist, smarts are pretty much mandatory.
Otherwise, not so much.
Cool. Then we're in agreement on that.
But what's happening is that people like Jesse Jackson are, for example, saying that high tech companies not having "enough" minority employees means that the companies are discriminating, and that this discrimination needs to be remedied. The push is not for people having jobs to which they are qualified, but for high-paying professional jobs to be evenly divided among the races.
Back in post #58, you had If someone wishes to become a rocket scientist, raw intellect is probably necessary. But observe any number of professions where the typical bear is not all that bright...college professors, in my experience...lawyers...doctors...each have their share of dim bulbs..
Do you believe that somebody with an IQ of 85 would make a good doctor? Would you have your child be operated upon by such a doctor?
Jesse Jackson wouldn't recognize a fact or truth if it snuck up and mugged him. This is just another example of how statistics lie. If anything in the Puget Sound region (where he's been gasbagging the last few days) minorities are overrepresented in tech.
...if one correctly considers, for example, that SE Asians are a minority.
But Jesse's not down with that. He's talking about 'real' minorities...you know, black.
The problem is supply. Computer Geeks aren't real known in the 'hood, because they be actin' white and all that chit.
It's not a lack of aptitude, it's not insufficient intelligence.
It's a shame, but it's not racism.
If you have any connections to tech companies, you know that competent black workers are gold. There's a lot of competition to hire them.
It's not a lack of intelligence.
