Singapore: A Remarkable Free-Market Success Story

I’ve written about the success of Hong Kong (particularly when compared to nations such as Cuba, France, and China), but haven’t paid as much attention to Singapore.

But it’s time to correct that oversight. I’m motivated to write about Singapore because of a story that reveals one of the unique features of that jurisdiction: The bureaucracy gets monetarily rewarded if the economy prospers.

Here are some passages from a Bloomberg report.

Yes - I read Wiki, too.

I linked to the citation.

The number should be 14 per 1,000,000, not 14 per 100,000.

So, the actual rate is 70 per year, not 700.

Plus, they have a footnote at the link.

They estimated Singapore's population at 3.5 million.

In fact, the population in the late 1990’s was about 5 million, so that brings the number of executions down even more.

Just bad luck on your link.

I find Wiki to be exceptionally reliable on published data, almost 100% of the time.

The current population is almost 5.5 million and in 1990 3.047 million according to their government.

I founded and ran a company in SIN during the 2000s. I could tell you some scary stories but I certainly will not post them here.

Never lived in Singapore, but visited many times. The space, order and clean air was a welcome break from China where I lived. I knew a few foreigners who owned and ran businesses in Singapore - they never spoke badly about it.

American style pluralism is exceedingly rare in our world. It works for us but not necessarily for other cultures.

An extremely important point few Americans seem to grasp - Especially those thinking we can make the Mid East into democracies....
