While range time can make you a better marksman, no amount of range time can simulate the amount of adrenaline and nervousness felt when placed within a real life and death scenario. Couple that with how the perp may have been positioned I’d say he did a fine job.
I’m guessing the leg was the only thing reasonably exposed and reasonably safe to aim at. At least he didn’t shoot the victim so I’m guessing he missed wide and adjusted back.
I remember a few years back where a Detroit cop shot a kid (teenager) in the hand at a fair distance. Kids were screwing around with a BB gun and one kid put it up to the head of another kid so the cop shot.
“Obvious need for range time. Good result.”
That is obviously time at the range well spent. Shooting around a hostage is a tough skill.
