It was not so much a victory as it was a repudiation. The GOP basically won by default. It wasn’t a vote for the GOP; rather it was a vote against the Dems. It was tantamount to cheering for the other team because your own team is so bad.
The GOP is a soulless party. What does it really stand for? Seriously, does anyone have any idea? People are just not boarding the GOP train yet because they don’t know where its heading, and neither do the conductors for that matter.
