Democrats and liberals used to talk about helping the poor.

In the last decade or so they’ve almost entirely stopped doing so, and now you only hear about “the middle class,” a group that in America has no real definition.

Does anybody have an idea why this rhetorical switch was made?

The switch was made because there aren’t enough poor to win national elections, and the shrinking middle class just delivered congress to the opposition.

The “poor” by definition are already on the payroll. Votes purchased. It’s therefore logical for the Dems to move up the income spectrum to grow the base.

Most people perceive themselves to be middle class, even when they’re not.

Smells like he is posturing for being asked to be her Vice-President.
