Natalie Dubose has no choice but to carry on, one day after rioters smashed the windows of her Ferguson bakery.
"I'm baking today," Dubose told CNNMoney, as the sound of broken glass being swept up can be heard over the phone. "We have orders to go out for Thanksgiving. I can't tell the people -- I won't tell the people -- that I'm canceling."
Like many other small businesses, her bakery Natalie's Cakes and More was vandalized Monday night in the wake of the grand jury decision not to charge Officer Darren Wilson with killing Michael Brown. The shop's main window is "busted out completely. They threw a chair in it to bust it out ... It's a big mess," said Dubose, who opened Natalie's Cakes as recently as June.
Despite the mess, however, Dubose says she will continue to bake. She can't afford to give up now, having invested all she had into a business that was funded through bake sales at flea markets. "I am a single mom, a mother of two," she said. "This is everything that I own. I can't walk away from it. I just got to start up and start baking again."

May God bless her.
Also, if anyone is inclined to do this, I looked it up and lots of nursing homes in the area.
My daughter is really saddened by this woman ‘s story.....she just sent her money.
Do u think overwhelmed ‘cause of the amount of orders or because of the support?
That’s a great idea.
Only if she delivers.
My wife bakes for farmers markets and is saving to open a shop. This sucks.
Btt
My impression was that as a small business owner, she was overwhelmed by the task, ahead. That is to say, trying to keep her doors open, on probably the busiest week of the year (for a bakery), while in the meantime, the world, as she knew it, was crumbling around her. I may be wrong, only my opinion, but my human empathy meter was ringing on high for her. Thank you.
Please consider a show of support. Not a lot of good news coming out of Ferguson, but this one deserves Freeper attention :)
Holy cow! You just talked to someone famous?
Definitely considering it. Don’t want to overwhelm her during Thanksgiving any more than she is, but maybe can order something for a nursing home in the area and also thought the fire department Jane Long mentioned upthread was a good idea...maybe for after Thanksgiving.
bump
“”God Bless this woman, she is courageous!””
AMEN! It’s sad to think that probably the rioters went home and slept like babies and the people owning the businesses that were burned to the ground didn’t have that luxury. How do people live with themselves after behavior like that? Unbelievable!
With these businesses destroyed, unemployment will go up and the whole community will suffer. Then I suppose residents will somehow blame racism or Republicans for their economic misfortune.
It’s completely disgusting and foreign to me. I was watching video of the so called step father talking about “Burn it down” to the assembled mob. What normal person would have a loved one die and wish and incite for violence, pain, and destruction on innocents? People like that and the radical feminists I look at, and I have nothing in common with them at all. There would be no way to have a dialogue. They might as well be from another planet.
Sad, but if she can get away from there she should
All white bread!?
She didn’t consider herself to be famous, and almost cried when I told her why I was ordering a pie. Just plain, and simple folk, like most of us, here, on this forum; the people who get up every morning, work hard, and make this Great Nation work.
The only famous person I ever talked to was the guy who played the role of The Maytag Repairman, decades ago :)
Thanks !
That sounds like a wonderful idea.
Blessings to you, and your family, this Thanksgiving.
The pic with the tears streaking down is heart breaking. Very sweet of your daughter to act.
Thanks tioga!
