St. Louis (CNN) -- A woman appears to have accidentally fatally shot herself in the head with a gun bought to prepare for possible Ferguson-related unrest, according to sources briefed on the police investigation.
The shooting occurred Friday night in downtown St. Louis, the city's Metropolitan Police Department said, in an area dominated by vacant lots beside a football stadium.
The female victim, identified in a police report as Becca Campbell, 26, was a passenger in a car involved in an auto accident. Her 33-year-old boyfriend was driving, the sources told CNN.

No kidding? Someone did that? wow.
I recall a weekend long party I held at the farm with my former roommate a few years ago. Sunday morning after breakfast they went down to “the playground” where there were riding trails, a firepit and a nice berm to set up a target range and they were taking turns shooting a 38 revolver.
My roommate’s girlfriend showed up and had never fired a weapon before, and none of those guys were qualified instructors as far as I was concerned... I was seriously not all that amused as they were treating it like a toy and they were all drinking, nursing hangovers from the night before.
At one point someone managed to get the weapon jammed, which I had cleared... but at that point I was just envisioning a bad BAD scene about to go down... I bit my tounge and stayed back.
When the one female finally hit the target (at 10 yards) she started jumping up and down “celebrating” waving the weapon above her head, finger on the trigger. Granted it was not a semiautomatic... but the sheer brainlessness... ignorance... and disrespect was more than I could tolerate. I turned and walked back to the house to clean up after breakfast.
I expected a tragedy... fortunately none happened.
Never again.
I’d at least check the gun for fingerprints and his hand for residue.
“From the description given, this dont pass the smell test.

I agree. From the article:
“The investigation is continuing because police want to be sure the story as told by the boyfriend is correct, the sources said. Police are awaiting gun trace results, as part of the ongoing investigation.”
I guess it doesn’t pass the police smell test either.
As a best friend said:
Stupid should hurt.
No foolin'! And check the (former) boyfriend's nose to see if it's grown since he told that story.
I agree - this doesn’t sound legit to me at all.
I admit, when I see reactive people getting guns for the first time I cringe a bit. Firearms, marksmanship, and the associated safety absolutes are more responsibility than most people are used to.
No, it does pass the smell test.
A lot of times around where I live, young blacks will get high and take some cigars and try to wrestle the gun out of a local cop’s hand and then charge him, getting shot. As a result, we’ll have this great big to-do about racist cops. Then sure enough there’s all these riots and grand juries etc, looting. Before you know it, my girlfriend will go out and buy a gun, wave it around in the car as a joke that she’s going to shoot me, I’ll duck, crash into car that wasn’t there before I ducked, she’ll shoot herself in the head. Before you know it, there’s all kinds of people saying ‘that doesn’t pass the smell test.’ Might say the same thing if it hadn’t happened to me more ‘n once.
I'm not interested in gun control, I'm interested in gun owners safely controlling their guns.
Odds are we’ll hear he’s been charged with open murder within a day or two.

Oops... I guess Holder’s peeps will protest the dealer the car came from and all the people involved.
Well, dayum!
I'm sure the authorities will do exactly that, but real life is not like CSI.
If he handled the gun previously, say, at the gun shop where it was bought, his fingerprints will be on it. Were her fingerprints over top of his or vice versa? I suspect his hands were larger than hers, too. That gets down to interpretation.
Also, a gun fired in an enclosed vehicle is going to leave GSR everywhere. So then you have to look at patterns. Again that involves interpretation.
None of this is cut and dried.
I’ll wait awhile before I judge, but the location, a bunch of empty parking lots near the stadium, sounds a little fishy, too.
Anything from Communist News Network must be seen with skepticism, but if she was playing with a loaded gun, this is a case of natural selection at work.
The Dearly Departed apparently violated a number of gun safety rules.
That would have been a much better outcome don't ya think?
The story smells rotten. Rebecca Campbell was a pro- Mike Brown protester:
“On 8/18, I took this pic of #Ferguson protester Becca Campbell arguing w a cop. Campbell was fatally shot on Fri.”
But which direction did she intend on pointing the gun?
Interesting.
