after a little research ... you may be right about Cosby's political leanings. But as a conservative I did appreciate when he called out the thug culture, and it endeared me to him for having the courage to speak the truth about what truly ails the black community.

From what I have been reading, his public persona was quite different from his private behavior. Since he was a big star so he could get away with it.
