Taking the white house is of minimal importance when compared to wrestling power away from the democrats in the senate and house.

I don't agree — there is no gain if we put into Congress people who are functionally identical to the ones currently therein. IOW, the (R) is meaningless if there's nothing to differentiate from the (D). [Look at Jeb Bush and Mitt Romney for examples.]
