They won’t do death squads. Even the USSR shied away from that after Stalin died.

We will be declared mentally unstable...”danger to ourselves and others” and sent away to mental institutions. Pumped full of mind-altering drugs, we’ll all act absolutely nuts when dragged into court. And the IRS will say “See? We told you they were crazy.”

That’s how Brezhnev’s USSR rolled.

In fact, it’ll be worse than that. We’re Americans, after all.

There will be hearings and documentation. You’ll get to speak your piece, although in most cases the fix will be in long before so you’ll lose. There will be the appearance of due process. Most of us found guilty will be told to go to an upscale hotel somewhere along the coast and attend workshops on diversity and tolerance, complete with Continental breakfast, and sign papers at the end agreeing that we attended, and put on a plan of improvement, which will be assessed by an army of bureaucrats, all of whom understand that they themselves can be treated the same way.

Rush and Mark Levin will be permitted to speak. Go to church, although if you mention it at work or at some places in public, you could be reprimanded for violating the diversity of the community.

Own your guns. Who are you going to shoot, some guy in a cubicle writing regulations based on some directives from another guy in another cubicle in a distant city, all based on a line in a 4,000-page law that says, “The secretary shall determine... “

Ever once in a while, someone will stand up and try to revolt against the system, and there will be a show trial denouncing “extremists.” Those speaking out will have reputations ruined or tarnished, in the tradition of the gang rape of Sarah Palin. Just observing those things should be enough to quiet discontent among the masses. There’s no need for terror when mere discomfort is sufficient.

For those who go along, there’s free porn and cheap weed. The really ambitious will soon realize that the way to the top is being a ruthless party apparatchik, although the real sociopaths will be drummed out of there, too, since those people can bring down the entire structure. Forget Mussolini. Think Harry Reid, using the system for personal riches and power. Go along to get along.

And in a few generations, the culture as we know it is dead, replaced by kind of a Mandarin bureaucracy that seeks to co-opt the brightest, ruin competition, and carry on the appearance of a free republic. No need for a dictator, either. Tradition will do the trick.

God help us.
