The first sightings of ice on Lake Superior and the Great Lakes overall usually occur during the beginning to middle of December. However, a perfect combination of last season's record ice coverage, cooler summer temperatures, and an early blast of arctic air this fall has allowed for areas of ice to form earlier than normal for the second year in a row.

Lots of greens like Broccoli, cabbage, asparagus. Plenty of root crops are good too. Michigan is still a top potato producing state.
Michiganders are primarily descendants of northern Europeans and used to grow a lot of the same crops they grew there.

Snowing in Central West Texas right now. Way too early for this area. We usually get a few snow events in Jan/Feb this far south.

Its the cold summers that become a real problem. Yes, the trough pattern continued more or less through this past summer. But when that pattern breaks, you will get your mild winter with a decent summer again. It's hard to tell when that is going to happen. Lots of factors involved, solar activity, PDO, etc.

Looks like basically either stuff that grows fast or doesn’t have to “ripen” to be edible...

Things that grow fast or can tolerate considerable cold. I went out and picked some half frozen broccoli today. Parsnips are harvested in the early spring.

Yeah, we were lucky to get that second peak a year ago. Plus there at least a couple years lag from the solar to the atmosphere via the oceans. The cold should begin in earnest by 2020 IMO.

Teflon? Obama is the first Flubber President. Things don’t just roll off him, they bounce off and accelerate in the opposite direction.
