“McCain will run Independent if HillBill will pickup the tab.”
Why should they finance McCain - he won’t draw a single Republican vote if he’s against a conservative.
Meghan? Cindy? John McCain will be 80. He just might want to run, but at this point nobody would vote for him.
Problem with the theory: Hillary's people aren't likely to have much contact or pull with a conservative candidate, so what they'd have to go for is more of a loose cannon -- Trump, Bloomberg, or some billionaire or other -- who might end up hurting her almost as much as the Republicans. Some Democrats might be attracted to a rogue populist or wacky millionaire.
Still, you can see something of the cleverness of the strategy. If there were a somewhat plausible conservative third party candidate in the race early on, that would help a moderate to the nomination by drawing off conservative energy. Then conservatives would be so alienated by the moderate that they would stay home or vote for the third party.
It should be noted, though, that given the politicians who usually run, nominating a conservative isn't the sure path to victory that some think it is.
If Paul gets the GOP nomination, McCain will run third party.
