This is Manhattan in a nutshell. Rich leftists who scream about the importance of the public schools, yet strive to not send their kids to those schools. Their “diversity experience” is rooted in the private school accepting a few token black kids from Harlem. In other words, “we like black people, but not too many of them.”

What's the old saying?

Southern whites don't care how close the black man gets as long as he doesn't get too high.

Northern whites don't care how high the black man gets as long as he doesn't get too close.

Rich Leftists consider everyone else to be lesser species suitable only for experimentation and indulging Leftist fantasies, black, white, or anything else.

I’ve had this discussion with my kids.
If my daughter wants to date, the son of two well educated black realtors at our church or African immigrant accountants she’s gone to school with for five years are acceptable. Intact families, religious, upper middle class.
But no kids from never-married families, no one who dresses up like a gang-banger, no one who isn’t in honors/accelerated classes.
So I set a boundary - of class, not race. But most blacks do fall below that boundary line, but that’s their fault for 3/4 illegitimacy rates and low educational attainment, not mine.
