Absolutely. I have seen a number of articles about such families, and always there was a strong, obvious role - usually by a pushy mother - who very much wanted the special status of having a transgender child. They were very invested in the role, and full of talk about their pains in facing up to a homophobic world.
There is a lot of information about trans regret at the following website. The author did an analysis of an interview with "transgender" boy and his mother, and pointed out how she was good at steering him into the conversation she wanted - I can't find the link to that exact story, but the site in general is here:

I feel so sorry for that boy, and I would call this one of the worst forms of child abuse. It is becoming more common.
“It’s just as bad a a doctor removing healthy eyes from someone who thought they’d be happier if they were electively blind”
This desire for self-mutilation is not all sex related. There are people who want their left arm chopped off, etc. I’ve never heard of anyone who wanted to be blind, but there might be someone out there who felt that way.
Remember that old Cat Stevens’ song: if I ever lose my hands/I won’t have to work no more (it goes on and on with many examples).
I don’t know how doctors deal with these people, but I’d be they get a lot LESS encouragement that these “transgendered” people do.
IMHO if you want to dress up like a girl/boy and live your life that way, well, I guess that’s your business. But when you start messing with your body then I start to think you’re a bit nuts and self-destructive.
Alas, Brave New Babylon.
My daughter met one of those kids in the hospital. It struck me as an extreme form of Manchausen-by-Proxy on the part of the parents—and utterly sick that they found a doctor to go along with mutilating a minor. And I’m sure they all wondered why the kid was in and out of the psych ward on a regular basis.
another future suicide?
Savage was talking about this today. He must read The Federalist.
I do too. He didn’t have the maturity to know how damaging this would be. He wanted the change for awhile then I do believe he began to see it was going too far for what his mom wanted. Some kids bashed, ridiculed and called him a freak. Michael, the freak. And, chants that he enjoyed the change to be a girl. Want some lipstick etc. I use to see him in the hall when I’d be running back to get a book or something, He would be crying. I would go over, talk him into going to see the school nurse or to the office for help before I got back to my room. Once the operations were often, he no longer came back to school. He said he mom always wanted a daughter. I wish that I could have done more but I was young / immature myself, just a kid.
I bet no one has followed up in depth, knowing what it would really show.
It's probably pretty grim if the people were really honest. Of course, no academic or gov't institution would ever fund such a study as it might counter the meme.
The problems are inherently psychological and I just don't think that mutilation mitigates the issue.
Curious - this is supposed to be "uncommon". How many anecdotes does it take before an occurrence qualifies as a trend?
Sterilization IS mutilation. Intentionally disabling the function of a healthy organ.
It is sad. The whole thing is a travesty!
How terribly sad.
You can't cure a mind by maiming a body.
Sooooooo, you chopped it off to become a chick. Did you save it in a glass jar so he could sew it back on later if you wanna play man again???? To bad, so sad, your . . . . . . screwed!!!!! Yippie Ki Yeah Cow Patty.
I feel for these people. I’ve been wanting my tail back for years.
A guy said he once felt he was a male in a female’s body -— but then he was born...
Wow... That's good. Captures it perfectly I think.
I'm guessing the potential money explains a good part of it. Although I sometimes suspect some surgeons just like the challenge.
