AAs have no exclusive claim on this. Next question please.

Yes, my quesion is:

Why do you accede to "political correctness" and bother to call them African Americans?

For whatever reason, African-American has become an accepted term to refer to a particular group of people.

When I was younger, such people were called Negroes. For unknown reasons, the term Negro fell into disuse and was replaced by the term black.

Years before my time, the term colored people was accepted as a descriptive term. Then at some point it actually became an insult or a slur.

What I don’t know is who actually decides these things. Or if critical masses of people just start using words and they become accepted.

It happens with other groups too. Homosexuals are now gay. Liberals and leftists are now progressives. Oriental people are now Asian. But Asians in Great Britain are people from India or Pakistan, not the Orient or Far East.

If you use the wrong term, the politically correct crowd will call you a bigot for that, and disregard the content of what you have to say.
