The link is solid but the server hosting my TechTrek domain is intermittent.

I'm sorry - the server was still flakey at 7 AM when I first came to post, but seemed to be working okay by this afternoon. Now it's all bunged up again! I'm really frustrated, but until the problem is fixed there's nothing I can do. But, I'll leave the tunes up all week and by Sunday, Monday or... well, if a link times out, just come back later and try again. I've done some prep on this jukebox, I really love Jack, have an extensive collection of his work and I'm crushed that the server is taking the night off again.
I'm going to keep posting the links I've already prepared at any rate, they are bound to work eventually ... just not right now. If you refresh the Canteen page and can't see my red, white and blue Drumbo icon at the bottom of my posts (or worse, see the dreaded red X) that means the server is off-line. A Freeper with a heart of gold paid the hosting bill and domain registration - honest.

Ask anyone how long a football field is and everybody and his brother will say, "100 yards!".....but that would be exactly, 100% el wrong-o. A football field is 120 yards long. Oh, so you do not believe me, huh? Then why is the record for a punt return 109 yards, huh? Well, huh? ;-) Connie: Jimmy Saa - Creación Divina, ( [ Women Are A ] Divine Creation )

Recorded in the studio during the 1967 sessions for their album Disraeli Gears, this song didn't appear in America until the release of the multi-Platinum double album Wheels of Fire in 1968 (the first album to reach Platinum status in recording history). An Albert King standard, Cream's version became a hallmark of British Blues, often imitated, but never surpassed, even by the likes of Jimi Hendrix, John Mayall, Albert Collins, Etta James, Big Mama Thorton, John Lee Hooker and Albert King himself. Long before Led Zeppelin debuted their catalog of blues classics, Cream had established dominance and king of the hill status.
Deceptive in it's simplicity and repetition, when I was making my bones as a young player in 1969 and a bandleader called this chart, it was the mother's milk of blues and separated the players from the kids with guitars.
Rather than copy King's guitar work, Clapton delivers a crisp and innovative performance that is one of his most memorable and Jack's rock solid bass chops and soulful crooning remain unparalleled.

Another alumni of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, British blues/rock guitarist Peter Green was the founder of the band Fleetwood Mac. Here, he's joined by Aynsley Dunbar (Santana, Journey), Rod Stewart (Jeff Beck Group, Small Faces) and pre-Cream Jack Bruce in a one-off quartet known as "The Shotgun Express" in 1966.

SCHUBERT: LITANY FOR THE FEAST OF ALL SOULSJohann Georg Jacobi was a German poet of the second rank, and Franz Schubert at 19 turned this little bit of dross into his greatest gold. Tony Salieri was beside himself with pride when he heard this song. The mix of German and Italian styles is exquisite.

ALL SOULS DAY: DEATH AND RELIGION
SCHUBERT: THE LITTLE PASSING BELLI did one of Franz Schuberts Seidl settings, the male quartet Grave and Moon, yesterday. This is another Seidl setting, a bit on the sentimental side. But Frannie here turns another third rate poem into gold.
The little passing bell of the title is rung by an altar boy when he accompanies a priest delivering communion and last rites to a dying person. The pianist plays the bell on the little finger of his right hand twice in each bar throughout the song.
Ring the night through,
Bring sweet peace
To him you toll for!
Ring out in the far distance;
Thus you reconcile pilgrims
With the world.
In the second verse, Schubert cadences in the sub-mediant, which is why this song is not strictly strophic. But then when he repeats the line, he cadences in the minor to prep for the next verse.
But who would wish to journey
To the loved ones
Who have gone before?
Though he gladly rang the bell,
He trembles on the threshold
When a voice cries Enter.
Frannie may have felt he was a wicked son, leaving his monster of a father to seek his way in the world. He sets this verse in the minor and without irony.
Is it meant for the wicked son
Who still curses its sound
Because it is sacred?
No, it rings more loudly
When a man who trusts in God
Concludes his lifes journey.
Schubert loved dogs, and he sets this terrible, mawkish verse without embarrassment in the tonic major.
But if it is a weary man
Deserted by his kin,
Whose faith in the world
Has been saved
Only by a faithful beast,
Call him to you, O God!
This verse Frannie took to heart, as his circle of friends was what sustained him in his 29th year. It ends with contentment.
If it is one of the blessed
Who partakes of the joys
Of love and friendship,
Then grant him yet bliss
Beneathy this sun,
Where he gladly tarries.
This is Scot Weir accompanied by Samuel Bächli.

Yes, Aynsley Dunbar played drums for Zappa, but not until 1970-1974, but he didn’t play with Santana until ‘69 or so and didn’t join Journey until 1975 (the year they debuted). His Resume after 1966 is astonishing, including David Bowie, Lou Reed, Michael Schenker, Mick Ronson, Nils Lofgren, Ian Hunter, Paul Kantner, Sammy Hagar, Jefferson Starship, Whitesnake, Ronnie Montrose, UFO, Leslie West and Jake E. Lee. Prior to ‘66 he was best known for a stint with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers and for being the drummer who lost the coin flip when Jimi Hendrix was deciding on a drummer for The Experience. Mitch Mitchell and Aynsley had both impressed Jimi and he really did leave the decision to a choice of Heads or Tails. I was being lazy and perhaps saving something for the Aynsley Dunbar tribute, coming to a Canteen near you. :P

"Too Many Cooks", was produced by John Lennon and recorded in 1973 in Los Angeles. The track features guitarists Danny Kortchmar and Jesse Ed Davis, keyboardist Al Kooper, drummer Jim Keltner and on backing vocals, singer-songwriter Harry Nilsson. Lennon recruited Jack Bruce to play the bubbling bass line. Neither Lennon nor Bill Wyman, who was also present at the session, appear on the track but, it's possible that Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett as well as Eric Clapton were involved.
According to recording engineer Jimmy Robinson every Sunday night at 6 P.M. at The Record Plant, L.A., Gary Kellgren would throw a special A-List only party bearing the name "The Jim Keltner Fan Club Hour" after world famous drummer Jim Keltner who was well known in musician circles at the time. Austin Godsey who lived with Jack Adams across from Frank Zappa's house in Laurel Canyon where Jimmy Robinson was also living invited Robinson to the latest "Jim Keltner Fan Club Hour" party at Record Plant in Los Angeles.
Robinson, who seems to be the only person who remembers, says upon arrival at the Record Plant, he was asked by Kellgren to help out with recording the artists during the jam session. The artists Robinson recalls at the studios that evening were John Lennon, Mick Jagger, Jessie Ed Davis, Danny Kortchmar, Trever Lawrence, Bobby Keys, Jim Price, Jim Keltner, Ringo Starr, Bruce Gary, Wolfgang Metz, Rocky Djubano, Mike Finnigan, Al Kooper, Harry Nilsson, Vennetta Fields, Clydie King, Claudia Lennear all for a track to be entitled "Too Many Cooks are Bound to Spoil the Soup". The engineers for the session were; Gary Kellgren, Lee Kiefer, Austin Godsy, and Robinson. The current location of the original 16-track master is unknown to this day, however bootleg 2-tracks have surfaced from time to time on the internet. Although Robinson's account doesn't mention Al Kooper or Jack Bruce, John Lennon's own account did. However, with the kinds of drugs and alcohol (Jack's drug of choice in those days) that flowed at those "A-List" affairs it's remarkable anyone remembers anything or were able to perform. Obviously someone lost or misplaced the 16-track master tape as this is a copy of the bootlegged 2-track.

ALL SOULS DAY: DEATH AND RELIGION
SCHUBERT: SISTERS GREETINGFranz Bruchmann was a part of Schuberts circle of friends, and Frannie set this execrable text written by Bruchmann out of friendship with the family. The occasion was the death of Bruchmans sister at age 18.
In later years, Bruchmann would marry, lose his wife to death, become a priest and then a bishop. In his last years he would write a reminiscence of the Schubert circle, condemning their casual bisexuality, but not naming it directly. One did not write of the love that dared not speak its name, especially if one was a high-ranking churchman and involved with such a group of such people in his youth.
This is a case of Schuberts taking a fourth rate poem and turning it into gold. Note the quote from the finale of Beethovens Eroica Symphony, set in the minor, that underlies the piece.
This is Janet Baker accompanied by Gerald Moore. If you expand the text, you get both English and German lyrics.

ALL SOULS DAY: DEATH AND RELIGION
SCHUBERT: TO SING ON THE WATERIs pantheism a religion? One of Schuberts friends once said to him, I think one god is too few for you.
Leopold Stolberg was older than Wordsworth, but his German poetry has that English Romantic sound with a taste of the modern. Franz Schubert was 26 when he turned out this short masterpiece about death as nothing more than flowing with time. The song is strophic and utterly simple despite its seven flats.
This is Barbara Bonney accompanied by Geoffrey Parsons. Both German and English lyrics are available upon expanding the video.

ALL SOULS DAY: DEATH AND RELIGION
VAUGHN WILLIAMS: TOWARD THE UNKNOWN REGIONWalt Whitman, although American, was a favorite of English composers. Attributing religious sentiments to Whitman is difficult, but perhaps pantheism or neo-paganism is the best fit.
Early in his career, English composer Ralph Vaughn Williams went through a Brahms phase, and this setting of Whitman is a good example of something written for an amateur choral society, which is how I first heard it.
It starts quietly in A Major leaning into the minor.
Darest thou now O soul,
Walk out with me toward the unknown region,
Where neither ground is for the feet nor any path to follow?
The chorus flowers into parts.
No map there, nor guide,
Nor voice sounding, nor touch of human hand,
Nor face with blooming flesh, nor lips, nor eyes, are in that land.
He returns to the opening material developed as a canon. The passage at 6:23 is haunting.
I know it not O soul,
Nor dost thou, all is a blank before us,
All waits undreamed of in that region, that inaccessible land.
The violas take the theme. The chorus opens up with the sopranos singing in the rafters.
Till when the ties loosen,
All but the ties eternal, time and space,
Nor darkness, gravitation, sense, nor any bounds bounding us.
The key changes to F Major, and the sun comes out. The arrangement of the last line is unforgettable, sublime. Have your handkerchiefs ready.
Then we burst forth, we float
In time and space O soul, prepared for them,
Equal, equipt at last,
O joy, O fruit al all!
Them to fulfill; O soul.
This is David Temple conducting the Aurelian Ensemble and Hertfordshire Chorus.
