New Jersey Releases Nurse Quarantined for Suspected Ebola [Christie Reverses Course]
NBC News ^ | 10/27/2014

The nurse forcibly quarantined in New Jersey after she came home from treating Ebola patients in West Africa will be released Monday, state officials said. Kaci Hickox has been held against her will in a tent outside a New Jersey medical center since she was taken off a flight, flushed and distraught, Friday. Hickox has hired a lawyer and spoken out publicly against her quarantine.

“Since testing negative for Ebola on early Saturday morning, the patient being monitored in isolation at University Hospital in Newark has thankfully been symptom free for the last 24 hours,” New Jersey health department officials said in a statement. “As a result, and after being evaluated in coordination with the CDC and the treating clinicians at University Hospital, the patient is being discharged.”

The case quickly escalated over the weekend, with Hickox protesting from her confinement and scientists including Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, saying there was no medical basis to hold her. The White House even weighed in, pressing New York and New Jersey to reverse their decisions to quarantine all returning medical workers who have treated Ebola patients.

Hickox will be allowed to take private transport home to Maine. “Since the patient had direct exposure to individuals suffering from the Ebola Virus in one of the three West African nations, she is subject to a mandatory New Jersey quarantine order," the statement read.

“Health officials in Maine have been notified of her arrangements and will make a determination under their own laws on her treatment when she arrives.”

I am happy they had a good teacher.

Not one, over fifty.

Whether you never saw it happen does not negate the reality that it does happen.

Whether it happens does not indicate the ubiquity you touted.

If it doesn’t then pray tell how we have so many scientists totally unfamiliar with actual science?

As subjective a metric as I have seen on FR. The big problem with "actual science" is that the amount of work necessary for a PhD precludes breadth. Effectively, the breadth of graduate qualifications are limited by undergraduate work, which is limited by k-12. There is a way to fix that.

Spend some time talking with ex teachers who left the system because they couldn’t deal with this crap.

Given that I write technical books incorporating everything from botany to linguistics, I personally know well over 50 researchers personally, both retired and not. I read tons of current technical papers and probably a book a week. Of their students I see both great work and garbage. Both are spotty. I just don't think such blanket statements hold.

As I said, there are good teachers out there. And with over a decade in the media as a journalist and an editor I interviewed both types across the spectrum. I also personally know a couple that left the field because of that and things every bit as asinine.

When you have a science department that teaches global warming is real, then that’s not science. When you are allowed to google answers, education does not take place. Whether it’s in an elective or the hard ‘sciences’.

“That being said, what the heck is wrong with these doctors and nurses who risk there lives to save people in Africa but don’t seem so concerned about spreading the disease here in the US?”

The talking heads everywhere all talk about these ‘returnees’ after they return to the US . . . What about the people that are on the airplanes - passengers, flight crews, ground crews, airport crews, and on and on . . . There is a lot at stake here and there are not enough ‘logical thinking people’ in sight...... I can’t understand how they cannot seem to develop any logical, straight-forward plan to address the issue..........too much politics and not enough concern about citizens . . .

I’m glad he backed down. The whole thing was a political set-up anyway. I’m no Christie fan, but she’s out of his state and can be a problem in her own liberal hidey hole. There is no doubt that there will be another health care worker that brings Ebola back from Africa, and it’s 100% on Obama now that it’s clear where this pressure to not quarantine came from. It’s not about saving American lives for these traveling volunteers nor our politicians, so game on. I pray some good comes of it.

This is hardly a “fold”by Christie. In spite of the NBC headline. Maine agreed to take her out of Jersey or she’d still be in the tent, whining and bitching. And remember NBC’s own Doc Nancy is still voluntarily quarantined after going to Afreeka and seeing her camera guy get sick. This is one of the reasons the MSM is not carrying a whole lot of water for the redhead. But that doesn’t mean they wouldn’t slant a story to make somebody else look like the resident dumbass-—instead of Doc Snyderman.

When you have a science department that teaches global warming is real, then that’s not science.

A biologist or chemist has no technical basis for understanding that issue. Hence they are as dependent upon authority as anyone else. That is more a k-12 and lower division undergrad problem than it is a creature of graduate education.

When you are allowed to google answers, education does not take place.

Nonsense. Once one has access to data, qualification then depends upon what one can do with what one finds. With more information available, one has the option of asking questions that rely more upon synthetic ability to stitch facts into useful applications, which then demands full comprehension of said supporting analytical facts. Where do you get these blandishments?

Maybe we are just talking past each other here. Lets start over. I think that when people are asked a question about which you have no prior knowledge and you simply look up the answer, then yes, you have answered the question.

Now if you are hired to do a job, lets say something neutral here; Welding titanium, and you know, thanks to your lookup that it requires special care/inert environments to avoid crystallization during the welding process, but you don’t know WHY...then you really don’t know anything at all and are guaranteed to hose the part if you try welding it without a lot more actual knowledge.

Would you agree or disagree..

I would love to know what Valerie threatened Christie with. I guess Fatso’s romantic walks with Obola on the beach didn’t really mean anything....just a late summer romance.

Oh, I am guessing neither state would have received any government money and that O would spend the next two years suing them.

That is not what happens in any open book test I have ever taken. Ever. Nor do I know of any professor who writes tests like that. Not one. Open book tests are usually harder, because the book can't help you. I have had exam questions that literally required inventing a completely new product to solve the need posed by the question using the principles described in the book. It is as if one had learned about transistors and was asked to use them to design a radio to meet specifications. I actually had an exam question that expected the students to invent Dolby as a noise reduction technique, knowing what they did about mathematical transfer functions.

In other words, you are completely clueless about typical open-book examinations in technical college courses. Stick with reporting, but I suggest you start with facts.

This lady is one totally selfish individual to insist that she has the right to possibly infect innocent people so as not to be inconvenienced for a couple of weeks. When a person has been in a condition where they might be infected, it is very selfish to insist they have the right to possibly expose other innocent individuals who do not know they are being exposed, just to prevent being isolated for a couple of weeks. I mean, how hard is it to be isolated for just a couple of weeks?

Not that I wish it on Ms. Hickox, but it would be a true irony if she subsequently came down with Ebola.

Good. Pay attention to the scientists not politicians with an agenda.

Do you mean actual scientist scientists, or global warming-type scientists?

I find it odd that the Obamunists have taken such a strong position on this (quarantine), based on such weak data.

If they’re right, they gain little. If they’re wrong, they’re f***ed.

What’s in it for them?

Very astute of you indeed regarding the bath houses!!!

Your wife is also spot on!

Anyone who does the Good Samaritan thing in Africa and objects to appropriate quarantine is anything but a Good Samaritan.

Something more like the sociopath named "Typhoid Mary" comes to mind,
