BROOKHAVEN, W.Va - If you don't look in the weeds, sometimes you miss the signs.
Late this summer, along the edges of this Mountain State town, a homemade sign jutted from the edge of a country road. It read, simply: Change is coming.
A few miles west, toward Coopers Rock State Forest, another sign almost hidden by a cornfield read, Change is in the air.
West Virginians always have had a distinct disdain for big government, yet poverty has kept them dependent on the one political party that provided just enough free stuff to lock them into voting for it.
A new generation willing to free itself from that tradition, along with new opportunities in energy, has put change in motion, however. Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito, a Republican, is poised to crush Secretary of State Natalie Tennant, a Democrat, in the race to replace retiring U.S. Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D).
West Virginia is not the only state sending signals to the political class in Washington that the Senate majority is tilting Republican, much more significantly than they understood.
Republican Scott Brown, the single-term Massachusetts senator who moved across the street to New Hampshire, has relentlessly kept up his populist message of hard work, not hard ideology; he is heading toward an upset in the Granite State's Senate race that could put the conventional-wisdom pundits on their heels.
Most political watchers in Washington are tethered to polls that shift 2 points in either direction and think they've understood this cycle. But they haven't understood the signs just below the horizon, literally.
Competency, political disconnect, lack of shared values and work ethic, all have pushed voters away from the Democrats and not just Republican voters; many Democrats and independents have had enough of how today's Senate majority squandered so much potential,

You can't look in the weeds if you've got your head up your ass.
That’s because at least 90% of them are collectivists to some degree or another.
We have this huge Alien with their tail wrapped around our necks (DC), impregnating us with MarxiCronyism, yet are concerned that it’s the flea and mosquito bites about our ankles that is killing us (local ‘community organizers’.
And the day after the Pubs win back the Senate, Mitch McConnell announce that he plans work with his friends across the isle to get things done, starting with “comprehensive immigration reform”.
West Virginians always have had a distinct disdain for big government, yet poverty has kept them dependent on the one political party that provided just enough free stuff to lock them into voting for it.Nonsense. You dont keep voting for the cause of poverty if you want to get out of poverty.
Not to sound too pessimistic, but I think that maybe Salena Zito may be munching on Colorado Brownies or something.
Or maybe wacky-backy. Marajawanna.
In many respects, West Virginia is blazing the trail that we should want blacks and other minorities to follow.
To my knowledge, Republicans haven't pandered to the Mountaineers. Instead, there has been a recognition, on their part, that the 'Rats really aren't on their side and we are.
That is, they've come to the proper conclusion on their own. And the Republicans have followed thru, by supporting the coal industry.
Georgia’s Senate race is Mitt Romney all over again, and that could be a problem for Republicans.

No kidding. Keep running RINOs; keep losing Elections. The GOP has got to start putting forward candidates who are a clear alternative to the Marxist DemocRATS. But, as long as Karl Rove and Mitch McConnell have the money, and the power, to beat down and demoralize Conservatives, that’s not going to happen.
West Virginia needs to get rid of Joe Manchin. He claims to be a Conservative Democrat. Mule muffins!!! He came out today endorsing all the incumbent DemocRATS trying to hold onto their Senate seats; every stinkin’ one of them. He said they are Moderate Democrats and ONLY Moderates (Republican or Demorats) can get anything done in the Senate. Maybe D.C. has castrated him or maybe he just never had a pair to begin with.
Andre’ Carson, the Racist Black Panther Muzzie Dem that Reps Indianapolis, based on his mother’s name, was actually running a BUNCH of radio ads this weekend. And not just on Black Radio.
He has a MASSIVE War Chest, and is running against a no-name nobody with NO money.
If he is worried enough to actually spend a few bucks, what does that say about other Dems??
It may be as simple as confidence in well organized voter fraud.
That is the ONLY purpose in opposing Voter I.D.!!!!
[well-organized] == [many closely coordinated participants]
[closely coordinated] == [lots of communications]
Remember Ben Franklin's rule: Three can keep a secret if two are dead.
Pithy and educational at the same time!
Well played sir, well played.
CC
arguably Reid did more damage to the DImocrats than Obama........
I don’t trust anyone who says Thom Tillis is a great candidate, as this author does.
Tillis is a terrible candidate and his ads have mostly sucked. He hasn’t gone after Hagan for her indefensible vote for the Gang of Eight amnesty/immigration surge bill. Most North Carolinians (like most Americans) don’t know that bill would at least double legal immigration. Tillis should inform them and make Hagan defend it. But he doesn’t.
The difference going on in WV is the Tea Parties. There are several small T.P. Groups that have been working hard under the radar to groom and elect young conservative Republicans. They hare slowly but surely taking the state leadership away from the good ole boy Dem. cabal. In our county we have elected two great Republican Delegates who shook up things in Charleston. They are now running for their second term and are joined by a third young conservative. Jim Butler is a former Marine and he has been a great leader and making a name for himself and clogging up the dem’s crooked plans. I pray that we can reelect him. He also started our local T.E.A. and is a good family man and my good friend. We’re working in WV folks. I spoke with Shelley Moore C. Friday and it’s looking good for her at this point.
Jay Rockefeller was Governor of W Va and helped many get on the rolls of entitlements. Once he went to the Senate, Manchin is trying to follow in his footsteps but with one foot in Democrat hole and the other in moderation.
Salena Zito seems to be cheerleading.
Hope she is right.
