Sorry,but the common core is not the reason why ‘merca is ranked low in mathematics. It is the culture. How many of you say “I am not good at math” like it is something funny and casual? What this means is that being math illiterate is not the sign of ignorance, rather a choice and sophistication.

I note scores of unused “Smart Boards”. I teach adult level classes sometimes. The best tools are an overhead projector and a white board (much cleaner than a chalk board). Death by power point is efficient but nothing beats time spent giving and working examples but we often have to take that out in the interest of valuable time. Training takes people away from work and is expensive (forget trying to explain the value of training since all you hear from most managers is how much it costs)

Every class I have to teach a small section on how to do math with bracketed functions and the correct order of operations. I often provide an equation sheet and they still get the answers wrong and wail loudly about how it isn’t fair and how they aren’t engineers and this should be in an app or excel bla, bla, bla, bla.

A lot of these problems can be fixed if YOU run for a seat on your local school board. Get active.

It takes only a few bucks and some paperwork to get on the ballot. In some cases, a few friends with large families and a small budget is all that is needed to run a successful campaign due to low voter turnout in these elections.

Then go to your next local Republican or Tea Party meeting and introduce yourself and tell them why you are a conservative candidate they might be interested in supporting. If you are a member of a large church, let it be known you running for the board. Gather support from registered voters.

If you don’t get elected, at least you have scared the hell out of your liberal board member opponent and his cronies. Whether you get elected or not, in some liberal areas a conservative candidate can expect death threats, cross burnings, toilet papering, slandering gossip, and maybe an occasional 3 a.m. drive-by horn honker. But do not let them intimidate you.

If you fail the first time, run again. This time tell them you are a moderate or moderately conservative. It worked for the RINOs and democrats. But get elected, otherwise nothing is going to change.

I would first look towards PISA for a flawed test, since it has a consistent favoring of compulsory streaming (Europe, Asia) over voluntary streaming in education. That is, the US has a wider variety of people in its educational system as well as its various forms (whether by government, parochial, private, home or other) and differentiations (regular, AP/Honors).

Factor that out and you would see a marked jump in the rankings (much to the EU’s dismay). One could then see how various teaching methods have caused educational harm towards students.
