Why couldn't Roberts just do the right thing and not seek another term, and all of this crap would have been avoided?

Well he didn’t. Power and ego are heap powerful medicine. People need to quit acting like the Japanese Officer Corps and advocating collective hari kari in support for the Emperor of Conservatism. Staying home is political suicide.

Because, like Ted Kennedy, he thinks that is his seat.

WHY DIDN’T THE RNC APPOINT A COMMITTEEMAN TO TAKE HIM ASIDE AND SAY:

“Look Ted, you’re 2 years away from 80, you will not live to finish your term, and this “residency” thing will come back to bite you in the butt. So, pack it up and git yo’ ass back home to Virginia. We’re getting some new blood in here.”

Why? Because, the good ol’ boys look out for each other.
