Not true, the NKVD (internal police) were positioned behind the Russian Army regulars to shoot deserters. The deserters took to surrendering to the German troops, seeking asylum. Significant numbers of Russian troops were formed up into all Russian units which served as front line shock troops, supporting the German invasion. The defecting Russians made a critical mistake by circulating claims that "It takes a Russian to kill a Russian!". These claims did not go unnoticed by German officers who called in SS units to quash the embarrassing rumors.
Bad news for the Russian troopers as there was no place left for them...
