Air strikes are ineffective unless there are trained spotters imbedded in forward positions communicating with the pilots. Ordinarily Special Forces or trained CIA agents would be present. Its a good bet that some very brave Americans are currently serving with the Kurds trying to direct those strikes.

This week, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned Kobani’s fall was imminent, saying that U.S. airstrikes weren’t enough to save it and ground troops would be needed to stop the town falling into jihadist hands. If Erdogan is so worried, why doesn't he defend the town?
