I think the liberals see the Church as an institution not always in lockstep with their most cherished institution: the state.
The God a person worships may have no mention in any religion. There is worship of money, power, family, governance, and group affiliation at the top of the chain-of-command instead of the true Providence.
Going to a building that happens to be a church or other structure primarily used for standard religions may have nothing to do with worshiping God, your heart to the Heart of God.
