Researchers: Ice still thinning in Arctic; record ice in Antarctic

The final results are in, and the Arctic ice cover reached its sixth-lowest extent this year in the era of satellite recordkeeping, dating to 1979, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center.

While 2014 nudged last year to No. 7 on the list, the overall seasonal loss between the high and low points – March 21 and Sept. 17 – was the least since 2006, the center said.

The total areal coverage, 1.94 million square miles, was significantly higher than the 2012 nadir – 1.32 million square miles – but the center said that overall ice is vanishing at the rate of 13.3 percent per decade.

“This year was nothing surprising. Overall we’re continuing the long-term decreasing trend,” Walt Meier, research scientist at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, was quoted as saying in the center’s news release.

By contrast, at the other end of the world the snow-and-ice cover reached a record level at the Antarctic. As of Sept. 22, it stood at 7.76 million square miles, or about 8 percent above the 30-year average...

The snow-and-ice center said the reasons for the growth were uncertain. Said Ted Scambos, the center’s lead scientist: “What we're learning is, we have more to learn."

They use 1979 as datum because in 1979 the ice was recorded at the highest levels. However since the ice has been recorded there has really been no change.

Hmmm... didn't US and Soviet submarines surface and shake hands at the North Pole in 1958?

“What we’re learning is, that we have more to learn.”

Well, there’s at least one honest scientist out there.

....but one thing is for certain no matter what we find, a global socialist command economy will be the solution to this and every other problem we can dream up.

Thank goodness! Disaster averted! Because if the ice were building at the arctic and thinning at the antarctic, the earth might get top heavy and tip over!

Just ask Hank Johnson.

We are still recovering from the last ice age, no one dares try to normalize the data to remove just the supposed impact of man and specifically carbon emissions from man made sources.

If he were honest he would have said, "What we're learning is that we don't know anything about anything."

It’s still more honesty than we usually get from our scientific overlords.

There was an article from earlier this year about the Russians claiming to have found increased volcanic activity, including several hot vents, under the Arctic ice.

There have been several other articles about increased vocanic activity under the ice cap for two years now, but since they don’t fit the Globo’ Warmin’/Climate Change agenda, they get ignored.

1979. LOL. How can you argue against such lengthy historical records.

Ding ding ding, we have a winner. So the global warming, climate change, ... whatever they are calling themselves this week... Well, let's just call them what they are: the power-hungry fascists need to STFU and stop trying to misuse something even the experts in the field don't understand as a basis to advance their control agenda.

The ice from the Arctic gets hot from the Sun, and the icebergs break off and are carried to the Antarctic by gravity.

That’s why the Antarctic has so much ice, and that does keep it from tipping over.
