Well to be exact, in Roe the vote was 7-2, with Blackmun (Nixon appointee) writing the majority opinion, and the two dissenters were Rehnquist (Nixon) and White (JFK).
When the court reconsidered Roe in PP v. Casey (1992) the court (in conference voted to overrule Roe 5-4 with the votes of Rehnquist, White, Scalia, Thomas, and Kennedy.
Rehnquist as Chief assigned the majority opinion to himself.
Within mere weeks of the opinion being released Kennedy sent a note to Blackmun saying he was rethinking his vote. Blackmun smile and scribbled a note that said “Roe sound”.
On the eve of the opinion being released the story is that Scalia went to the home of Kennedy and made a last ditch effort to change his mind- to no avail.
Kennedy is a scourge on this nation and has been for a long time (since 1987 IIRC).
In fairness to Reagan who nominated him, he was the third choice after Bork and the male Ginsberg were voted down by a strong Dem majority in the senate.
The court has been all politics since.

Didn't Ginsberg have his nomination withdrawn before he had a chance to be grilled by the SJC after reports that he'd smoked doobies in college?
