If you don't mind adding chronic COPD, bronchitis and very possibly lung cancer at some point to his back pain then maybe not.
More harm comes from smoking weed then any possible pain relief is worth.
It doesn’t have to be smoked. I know someone taking it for pain, it is very effective and only requires one dose per week. YMMV.
Does it have to be smoked? I’ve heard that as it is an herb, tinctures, glycerites, teas, salves, etc. are also effective ways of getting the herbal properties into your body.
Many people do not believe that herbal remedies are at all effective, but I’ve used them and they have worked. My son had a nasty case of impetigo, the prescription cream was over $50 for a half ounce tube. Knowing that it would probably spread to the other kids I went to the natural foods store to see if they knew of anything that worked & I bought Pau d’ Arco cream. It worked very well. I had the herb on hand already so also made a salve to have on hand during wrestling season. It has worked every time and has saved us hundreds of dollars.

As I understand it, herbs cannot be patented so there isn’t the huge profit margin that pharmaceutical companies have when a drug is first released. That may be part of the pushback against an herb that can be beneficial for pain relief.

And if you eat the MJ instead of smoke it, what lung damage do you get?
I went into a “medical marijuana dispensary” in Venice Beach CA out of curiosity. Much of what they sold was candy, cookies, butter (I can’t believe its Pot Butter on the label), brownies.
I think the stuff is toxic, but I’m just pointing out that you don’t have to smoke it.
