“Gee, then they own our multi-billion dollar embassy that we abandoned.”
It’s not abandoned and they don’t own it.
ISIS probably has many ex Saddam loyalists or elite Saddam troops who were devout Sunni’s and are now leading brigades of ISIS fighters. All of Saddam’s massive military did not all die or disappear, they just changed clothes.
They seem to have developed some ability in the 10+ years they have been fighting. And they are very determined. One of their signature moves is the suicide Hummer attack, where a Humvee is packed with explosives and driven right into the center of the opposing force, and detonated by the driver. This is shown in their recent feature length video, and was reported elsewhere in the storming of the Army base.
They have stopped using the Toyota convoys. A lot of the infiltration of Baghdad is being done on foot. They will be very difficult to bomb out of Badhdad, given the density of the city.
One thing that I find interesting is the absolute lack of journalist "boots on the ground". I guess a couple of beheadings is all it took to send our brave journos scampering for the exits.
Do we have any Freepers in the Embassy in Iraq? What is the mood there about fighting nearby?
If ISIS captures Baghdad, I expect the media to go into "this is GWB's fault" mode (if he had left Saddam in power, this wouldn't be happening) while trying to avoid talking about the implications this would have for the Middle East. The less the public reflects on the record of the Obama-Jarrett-Clinton foreign policy of the last 6 years, the less danger that Hillary's coronation will be derailed by it.
This is a great site for people interested in the on-going conflict. It's run by ex=military intelligence people, from the US armed forces.
Read about the rapid advances of the Imperial Japanese Army in 1941-42.
Calling ISIS "terrorists" has completely blinded us to what is going on. Terror, as a tactic, is a solvent of enemy morale and esprit de corps. ISIS is using the tactic very successfully, as Japan did from Hong Kong to Singapore and Java, as the SS did in Ukraine, and as the Red Army did back to them from Bagration on to the East Prussia offensive and into Berlin.
We don't study history, and we SURE don't want to hear it, but aerial artillery (bombing) does nothing to an enemy like this except to show that we are cowards who won't face them sword to sword, who won't take their women and raise their children in OUR image instead of theirs.
An army that fights like this can achieve truly astounding gains in very short order, especially against weak, guilt-ridden Western forces.
I expect the two Abdullahs to be bound and then beheaded within months.
The only difference between ISIS now and Japan then is that Tojo didn't have Twitter.
What we need to do has been obvious since 8:46 am on 9/11/01. That we are not willing to do it took a little bit longer to sink in, at least for me.
I heard that part of the conversation as well. It was chilling. In other words—You’re on your own, Vicar, and all your fellow Christians.
Hopefully, the American people will realize the long-reaching implications of this situation in the Middle East regarding ISIS and its brutal ambitions and its current path through Iraq toward the capital. I just pray that someone will come to the forefront soon and stop this insanity. And I know that might be wishful thinking.
I believe their are a lot more than 30,000 of them. They are motivated and well diciplined. They are fighting for a god that will forgive their sins if they die in battle. For them its a Holy War—fighting evil and America. The Iraqi Army is fighting for money and a corrupt government with no teeth. They didn’ fight well for Saddam, why do you think they would fight for the present government? Without a dependable army—Baghdad is doomed. We have few choces in this coming battle:
1. Send in troops to defend the capital. Nope not with Obama lite in power.
2. Move some other power in? Iran maybe? Nope.
3. Bug out before the fall. Maybe.
4. Let the embassy fall and watch as our people are killed on TV. (The Obama Way—Bengahzi II ) Maybe he can put his enemies in the place to be killed?
When they take ragbag they will own it pal.
Let me repost here the comment I posted to the American Thinker:
It is dismaying to see discussions (this is not the only one) of IS taking Baghdad, all of which underestimate how catastrophic that event would be.
Baghdad was the capital of the Abbasid Caliphate from 762, when it was founded by the third Caliph, Al-Mansur, until the Mongol conquest in 1258. To the extent there was a “Muslim Golden Age”, from the point of view of Sunnis, and especially Arab Sunnis, it took place when a Caliph reigned in Baghdad.
The symbolic value of its seizure would have consequences far beyond Iraq and neighboring countries.
IS seizure of Baghdad, especially with its defense being bolstered by the “Far Enemy” of the United States, with support from Europe, would be seen universally among jihad-minded Sunnis, and probably even among a broader segment of Sunni opinion, as legitimizing al-Baghdadi’s claim to be Caliph. The trickle of other jihadi groups swearing allegiance to “Caliph Ibrahim” would become a flood, and IS’s maps of the territory they propose to conquer would suddenly seem less arrogant, as they would instantly gain at least nominal control over areas controlled by the Taliban, Boko Haram, and all the other Sunni bad-actors.
Which is exactly what Obamba wants...along with EVERY democrat wanting to see our embassy run over and helicopters evacuating people on the nightly news!
