Why I’ve spent ten of the last 20 years in prison for defending the unborn
LifeSiteNews ^ | 9/30/14 | Linda Gibbons

Linda Gibbons awaits arrest outside a Toronto abortion facility.

Editor’s note: Linda Gibbons has been in prison since an August 7 arrest in Toronto while she witnessed to life outside an abortion facility protected by an injunction. Her case goes to trial November 12. She wrote the following letter this month to explain her ongoing mission.

This article is a reflection on my ten years of bearing witness for life in front of Toronto's several abortuaries.

My intention is not an apology for the reason, cause or purpose I engage in civil disobedience against injunctions in place at these death mills; I've written on that previously. My presence is more than a challenge to unjust laws. My presence is a response to a distinctive human cry: the cry of Canada's aborted unborn.

The courts have not responded to that silent cry. Currently, the killing of one in four children continues unabated.

Neither has the majority of Canadian parliamentarians shed tears over lives lost to abortion. Instead, they have unequivocally condoned the killing and compelled a tranquilized populace into paying for it.

When the social messaging regarding inconvenient or complicated pregnancies is "try again next time" or "better off dead," it's not a statement of the human condition but rather of cultural conditioning that implies some lives are unworthy of living. It begs the question: How much is a life worth? Unborn lives then become commodified and put on a sliding scale of values; ignored are the deliberate crimes against Canada's own children.

What then should be a human response to the senseless attacks against babes in the womb? Essentially, the answer for me is simply to be there as one human being recognizes the endangered life of another, and to act in his or her defense. My presence is a plea for each child in jeopardy of being killed and the pamphlets I carry bear witness to the incontrovertible evidence of a child's earliest existence, evidence denied them in the mill.

My presence is to plead for the living and to pray for the dying. I am witness to a holocaust: vis a vis over four decades of bloodshed.

Given the status quo of abortion on demand, with no legal redress throughout the entire gestation and delivery period, some would question the point of insisting that life is a sacred trust from conception until natural death and a God-given right worthy of defending.

My actions publicly demonstrate my commitment to resist the abortuary's campaign of disinformation and to dissuade women from entering the killing centre.

For Christians, the failure to resist the practice of abortion makes a travesty of our faith. An empty sidewalk at the death centres and silence from the pulpits is scandalous when we are called to deliver those being dragged to death and those ready to be slain.

Not to take action contradicts God's will and purpose for life. With abortion mills scarring the land from one coast to another and a death count in the millions, it calls for serious searching of heart. Have I done all I could in the face of such human carnage?

Should cares and commitments to family hold me back? What is the price of loving God's unborn and not relinquishing the fight? I've weighed all of these. If the cost of loving and remaining with my family is the price of unborn blood, then the "cost of living" with family is too high. At what time, then, may I divest myself of the charge to defend life?

Imagine for a moment, in our world plagued with political unrest, the enemy coming to our towns and taking our children from us (as is happening in Iraq and Syria). Could we beg deliverance from God for our own when we were so reluctant to deliver His own babes in the womb threatened with death? When cares of the world distract and disturb, I'm reminded of the words of the Talmudic sage that Elie Wiesel, a holocaust survivor, quoted in his book, Open Heart:

"It is incumbent on you to love as if you were to die the next day.”

The love of God constrains me to love the unborn as if there were no tomorrow. I only have today and in it I am called according to His purpose to answer the unborn's long and unending cry for life.

I remain present in their service.

In the Lord, Giver of Life,

Linda

But I have to ask: has she actually accomplished anything?

If she has prevented even one child from being chopped up by an abortionist then, to that child, yes, she accomplished something.

Cordially,

All wonderful verses, but none suggest that a righteous effort without the desired results is any less important.

Couldn't Moses have decided that getting the Jews out of Egypt was enough and stopped wandering?

Couldn't the Apostles have decided that they were saved and kept the Gospel a secret from the rest of the world?

Granted, neither Linda Gibbons nor anyone else who has protested outside abortuaries have succeeded in abolishing abortion, but that doesn't mean they should stop. As we see twice a year with 40 Days for Life, lives ARE being saved; the only acceptable long-term result is the complete eradication of abortion, but that doesn't make saving a single life any less significance.

As to your contention that protesting outside abortion clinics might somehow result in MORE abortions, I have never heard of a more absurd premise.

Maybe Dolan didn’t originate the concept, but he’s raised money to run ads showing it. Kudos to anyone who uses this concept to try and save lives.

That is true, but are you 100% sure that Operation Rescue and other operations like it have saved lives NET.....

I just am not convinced its the best use of time and energy in this battle. I’m tired of losing. I’d like to win once in a while.

Can you link to a single credible story from anywhere in the world where a woman says that she was fully intending to have the baby, but decided to murder the baby because she didn't like people protesting outside abortuaries.

If this is your contention, you need to back it up. Otherwise, it is pretty obvious from all of your comments on this thread that you believe everything would be fine if pro-lifers could somehow be silenced.

I just am not convinced its the best use of time and energy in this battle. I’m tired of losing. I’d like to win once in a while.

I find it disturbingly ironic that some who claims to be so opposed to the GOP establishment is using the GOPe playbook to silence or otherwise marginalize the pro-life movement.

What the hell is YOUR solution? You try to portray yourself as an important writer, when was the last time you wrote a story on abortion? When was the last time you talked to your GOP elite pals about the fact that the problems with illegal aliens and economy have direct results to abortion?

You claim that your "experiences in business, polling and political communications gives him peerless insight into the issues of the day." So, why does your website only link to two pieces you've done on abortion (one in 2008 and one in 2009)? Five years have passed, more than 7 MILLION INNOCENT AMERICAN BABIES have been slaughtered since you blessed your readers with your "peerless insight." More Americans die in abortuaries each year than have died in all of the wars America has fought in COMBINED, the silence that you and others advocate for only serves to continue the bloodshed.

not talking about that....but these operations have the potential to harden the hearts of young women not yet pregnant - but who will become pregnant. It’s these potential back end abortions I am talking about.

These operations generate a lot of bad press and frankly, even though I support their cause 100% - I’ve never felt good about them.

I am not alone in this. It’s astonishing how rude and self righteous you are when all I did was ask a respectful question. It’s amazing how you jumped to conclusions. It’s not pretty.

have saved lives NET.....

What does that even mean? I suppose a "net" requires some plus and some minus. But, maybe you would clarify.

I posted of one woman who personally told me that she herself was alive because of pro life vigilers. Show one person dead as a direct result of pro life vigilers.

I write for a lot of places, not just my site. But abortion is not an issue I do a lot of work on. Neither is global warming or foreign policy. Doesn’t mean I don’t care about them - doesn’t mean I don’t agree with the conservative positions on them - just means I focus where my expertise and interests are higher.

I am not an expert on this topic, thus the fact that all I did that got urine in your cornflakes was ask a question that for some reason irked you to no end. You should examine which demons in you caused that over reaction.

Scott Roeder and Eric Rudolph both got results

And stopped baby killing to some degree in their specific application

No question

Again, have you got ANYTHING to back up this theory? Because, it seems that your position is that we should just ignore abortion. So, once more, can your cite an instance where a woman had her heart hardened by abortion protesters and became pro-abortion?

If, as you seem to suggest, we all just shut up about, the ONLY thing most women will ever hear is that abortion is some sort of fundamental right.

Why do you think all of the abortion mills try to get the states to pass laws forbidding demonstrations in front of the death chambers? I can assure you that if they thought it was actually bringing in more victims they would go out of their way to make sure they stayed.

These operations generate a lot of bad press and frankly, even though I support their cause 100% - I’ve never felt good about them.

You have yet to cite a method you do feel good about.

I am not alone in this. It’s astonishing how rude and self righteous you are when all I did was ask a respectful question. It’s amazing how you jumped to conclusions. It’s not pretty.

Yes, I get that reaction a lot from people who "oppose" abortion, but don't really care to do anything about it.

1Corinthians 3:7 So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.

This woman is not a political strategist and what she is doing is not politics. She may belong to the pro-life community, but she is not leading a political movement.

I'm not sure exactly what NET means in this context, but yes, I am 100% sure that we saved some lives. I have seen the photographs of the mothers and babies here in St. Louis.

I am also absolutely certain that on certain days when I participated in rescues that no babies were butchered because we shut down the mill for that day.

Then again, it's easy for us to debate whether we were or were not 'successful' - we've already been born. We weren't killed by an abortionist.

Cordially,
