The new Type 56’s are small, cheap, and fast to build, while the Type 54A’s are more capable, and a better blue-water ship.

China does have LOTS of ship-building capability now, as well, and the last two ordered 54A’s (of 22) are under construction now, which means they have spare capacity.

someone posted here yesterday that China was having a significant problem with its ships having too heavy engines built in Ukraine. Well, it may not have been intended but Ukraine strikes back!
