I've got a Samsung cell phone that suddenly loses power and shuts off...even though it shows that it 85% charged.
Can you imagine driving down the highway when suddenly your car shuts down, although the battery shows that it's almost fully charged?

I had a station wagon with a gas gage just like that in the late eighties.
Always feels like it’s night when it runs out.

Happens when the battery is about to fizzle for good. My Samsung MP3 player did the same thing.
