ARLINGTON, Va. Five days into the U.S. and coalition air strikes against targets of the Islamic Levant (ISIL) inside Syria, and six weeks since the United States began flying air strikes against I Department of Defense (DoD) has yet to assign a code name to the operations.
During a briefing to reporters Sept. 25 at the Pentagon, RADM John Kirby, spokesman for the DoD, said he knew of no plans at this point to assign the operation a code name.
DoD and NATO routinely assign code names to combat operations, such as Operation Iraqi Freedom for the Iraq War from March 2003 to August 2010, and even the stability operations in Iraq from September to December 2011, Operation New Dawn. The U.S. air campaign against Libya in 2011 was called Operation Odyssey Dawn, succeeded by NATOs Operation Unified Protector. Even very short-term operations, such as Operation Praying Mantis against Iran in April 1988, often are assigned names.
