This sounds like something close to Guillain-Barré Syndrome or Transverse Myelitis but maybe milder forms. A cousin of sorts to Polio in the way it attacks the Myelin nerve sheathes causing limited or full paralysis.

GBS usually brings on respiratory complications whereas Transverse Myelitis usually doesn't. Both have been around a while. My wife was hit with Transverse Myelitis 29 years ago and it left her being an incomplete quadriplegic. Onset was about 24 hours. The doctors in 1985 when it hit first though GBS but she showed no signs of respiratory difficulty.

There are several disorders in this virus family including Polio, GBS, and Transverse. Basically the body turns on itself in some cases destroying nerve sheaths.
