In my area, beauty shops are about the only businesses left in the hood. Not having to spend money on food and rent leaves lots of money left over for hair and nails.

I find it interesting that the first self-made female millionaire in the US was a black woman filling the niche for hair care and other beauty products for blacks.

Back then, a generation-plus after the Civil War, pre-LBJ, pre-EBT, people had to pay for stuff.
