(1804 was the year the Haitians declared independence from France--slavery was abolished more than a decade earlier.)

It costs over $60,000 a year to attend Columbia. No offense, but unless I was getting a full scholarship, there is no freaking way I would waste that kind of money to study Latin American History. It better be science, engineering, law, and medicine I’m studying for me to fork over and borrow that kind of money.
